REMEMBERING PENTAGON TERRORIST ATTACK ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2013

Comments Off on REMEMBERING PENTAGON TERRORIST ATTACK ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2013

Today is September 11, 2013 and time again to remember the terrorist attacks, that occured in some  US cities on September 11, 2001.. I especially will recall the terrorist attack on the Pentagon, recognized as the largest office buildingin the world, because in 1942, I began working on the premises of this great structure, when its construction was in its early stages of construction. .After graduating from Central High School in D.C  in 1941, I applied and was hired as a clerk-typist by the US Engineers, in 1942. I was directed to report to a small building located on a portion of the Pentagon’s present location,in Virginia.. I was surprised when I was directed to a small wooden structure,on a huge tract of vacant ground  near  additional small Lincoln type shacks.I met my future supervisor who informed me that all the construction employees, like carpenters, electricians, sheet metal workers, etc would daily report to the shack to have  their beginning working hours  recorded by time keepers. Later in the day, US timekeepers would again check on the many construction workers.   My job was to type up separate time sheets for the employees. I remember that the 1942 pay scale for carpenters was $1.62 per hour.  The prime contractor for this huge project was the John Mcshain corporation who coordinated the construction details with the US EngineerI observed the growth of this structure, until March 1943, when I was inducted into the Army. When 5 Hijacker terrorists flew an American Airlines plane into my area of previous employment, killing 59 on board, and 125 building employees, on September 11,2001,  I was shocked. After getting my Army discharge in 1946, I visited the completed giant building, and recalled the days when the Pentagon began its growth.around 1942..Although working a short period on the Pentagon site, I enjoyed the job, and will never forget its unexpected deadly attack.
